Best Shoes for HYROX

The shoe question is the most common gear debate in HYROX. You need a shoe that can handle 8 km of running and provide stability for sled pushes, carries, and lunges. Pure running shoes are too soft; pure lifting shoes are too stiff. A hybrid cross-trainer is the answer.

ShoeTypeBest forNotes
Nike Metcon 9Cross-trainerSled work + short runsStable platform for pushing and pulling. Adequate for 8 km running. Wide toe box.
Reebok Nano X4Cross-trainerAll-round HYROXFlexible enough for running, stable enough for stations. Popular choice among HYROX athletes.
NOBULL Trainer+Cross-trainerDurability + gripExtremely durable upper. Good grip on sled surfaces. Slightly heavier than Nike/Reebok.
New Balance FuelCell SuperComp TrainerHybridRunning-heavy athletesMore cushion than a pure cross-trainer. Better for athletes who prioritise run pace.

Race Day Kit List

Shorts / Tights

Compression tights or running shorts with liner

Freedom of movement for lunges and burpees. Avoid loose shorts that catch on the sled.

Top

Moisture-wicking technical tee or singlet

Gold Coast heat means breathability is critical. Avoid cotton — it holds sweat and chafes.

Socks

Compression running socks (knee-high or ankle)

Compression socks reduce calf fatigue over 8 km. Merino wool blends prevent blisters.

Gloves

Thin lifting gloves or gymnastics grips (optional)

Protects hands on sled pull and farmers carry. Not required but useful for grip endurance.

Belt

Thin neoprene or leather lifting belt (optional)

Useful for sled push, sandbag lunges, and farmers carry. Must be wearable while running.

Race belt

Elastic race number belt

Avoids pinning your bib to your shirt. Lets you rotate it front/back easily.

Chalk

Liquid chalk (allowed at most events)

Significantly improves grip on sled pull and farmers carry. Check event rules.

Nutrition

2–3 gels + electrolyte drink

HYROX lasts 60–90+ minutes. Fuel at the 30 and 60 minute marks. Practice in training.

Gear FAQ

What shoes should I wear for HYROX?

A hybrid trainer that handles both running and gym work is ideal. Popular choices include the Nike Metcon 9, Reebok Nano X4, NOBULL Trainer+, and New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer. Avoid pure running shoes (too soft for sled work) and pure lifting shoes (too stiff for 8 km of running).

Do I need gloves for HYROX?

Gloves are not required but many athletes use them for the sled pull and farmers carry to protect grip and prevent blisters. Thin lifting gloves or gymnastics grips work well. Do not use thick gloves that reduce grip sensitivity.

What should I wear to a HYROX race?

Comfortable running shorts or compression tights, a moisture-wicking top, and hybrid training shoes. Avoid cotton. Many athletes wear compression socks for the running sections. A race belt for your bib is useful.

Can I use a weightlifting belt for HYROX?

Yes, belts are permitted. Many athletes use a thin, flexible belt for the sled push, sandbag lunges, and farmers carry. A rigid powerlifting belt is impractical — use a thin neoprene or leather belt that you can wear throughout.
